I have shifted from outside to inside. Instead of pulling from what is out there in the physical world it has now become a necessity to pull from what is in the cerebral world. With still life you can create a new world that did not previously exist for any reason and would never exist without a personal vision.

i have been trying to approach things differently. i feel as if the way i see something and subsequently photograph it has become predictable. maybe that is what personal style is but to me that feels redundant. i need to keep evolving. . . the question of how to do that is the tricky part. the easiest answer is to keep shooting and then shoot some more. i think that we see things in the world that are difficult to translate or render photographically. i wonder why this is. . . why do i see something in the world and take a picture of it and the essence of what i saw is gone. as an exercise i am going to start asking myself not what is right about an image but what is wrong with it. maybe this will lead to better images. so. . . here are a few brand new ones. . . i wonder what is wrong with these.

for all you fans out there i changed the description of my blog. i realized that there wasn't a lot of outness and i didn't want arbitrary content for the sake of being cheeky. so it is now. . . "an honest blog, honest to blog" and that will probably change.

so i was browsing the New York Times Magazine website. . .why? because they tend to push the photographic envelope and every once and awhile they publish an image that really makes you stop and think. i wish there were more images that not just made you stop but made you question and wonder. pretty soon you realize you are not even looking at a photograph on paper but looking at a photograph that has become an idea and it is no longer outside of you. here are a few of those that did just that.

i have found that the dichotomy of still life studio photography contrasts nicely with venturing into the world to pull from what is there. in the studio there is nothing until you actively make something while there is always something out in the world regardless if it is controlled or uncontrolled. like many photographers i believe that i try to impose order. the implications of this imposition suddenly become intriguing when you realize the high level of order that we see in so many photographs. maybe the visual world is not as chaotic as we are to believe or assume it is. in trying to push forth and establish a vocabulary of style it is critical to consider both order and chaos and begin to make some deliberate choice over one or the other. . . .or not.

so these images are the most recent. it is often a struggle to figure out why you take any given picture. this grouping is interesting to me because of their subtle obscurity. there is something within them. . . a bizarre place of worship, a dark area amidst dense vegetation, a t-rex that looks like it is on the hunt, the emptiness and softness of a pool at dusk. reason enough?? the reason i look for reason is in part due to a suggestion by the owner of M+B gallery in LA who said that i must find what i love. i drove to the salton sea, joshua tree and then ended back in golden gate park and i still don't know what i love but i took these pictures anyway.

i blog. why not? everyone else is doing it. but really there is some need to lay it all out there. it might take me awhile to figure out what the purpose of this blog is but it probably has to do with the less professional side of creating images. i take so many pictures that don't end up anywhere. maybe this is where they will end up. sounds good to me.
